Any colors will work for this card or painting. The background also looks great with a pretty blue. I used Lemon Yellow, Quinacridone Magenta, Cobalt Turquoise, Burnt Sienna, Black (my own mix of Transparent Orange + Indanthrone blue) and opaque white for touch-up.
For a smooth background wash, use a big soft wash brush for the main area and a smaller brush to get next to the objects precisely.
